This study examines the experiences of four social workers working in Ontario correctional facilities. The study examined whether social workers in this environment can practice from a structural social work framework. The study explores the struggles social workers face in trying to meet not only the conditions of good practice, but to practice from a structural social work perspective. The messages from every participant were that the demands of the work environment overwhelmingly impede on social workers ability to meet the conditions of good practice. Social workers felt that there was lack of support and recognition for the work they do. Many of the participants feel lonely and isolated, and that there is pervasive sense of powerlessness when it comes to influencing their working environment.
