Securitization and the Impacts and Perceptions of Migration Post-2015: A Scoping Review of Canada and Germany
This MRP looks at the responses of Canada and Germany to the 2015 refugee crisis.Applying a postcolonial lens to securitization theory and understanding, this research critically looks at the contexts surrounding Canada and Germany's responses and in how these countries implemented securitizing measures, looking at the inherent issues within the act. Through a scoping review, themes of the literature include national identity, the grapple between 'new Canadians' and 'willkommenskultur,' the role of the media, the role of the audience, and the gendering and racialising of refugees. With the goal in mind of what the future of securitization theory could look at, this paper also offers suggestions on how to reconcile with securitization following the critical postcolonial lens on the responses of Canada and Germany.
