This study investigates the structural response of bridge deck slab overhang in slab-on-girder bridge system based on the 2020 AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. A parametric study was conducted, using the finite-element method, on the overhang to determine the applied moments and tensile forces due to transverse vehicle collision forces with the barrier. Another parametric study was conducted to determine the applied moments resulting from AASHTO truck loading. The key parameters considered in this study included deck overhang of constant thickness and tapered shape with a span ranging from 1 to 3 m, barrier and overhang length in the direction of traffic ranging from 5 m to 20 m, and concrete traffic barrier geometries, namely: TL-1 through TL-6. The data generated from this study was used to develop design charts to design unstiffened and stiffened deck overhang. Such data can be used further to develop reliable empirical equations for design.
