This thesis is a survey of and response to the current state of media archiving in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Beginning with a description of the history of film production and archiving in Newfoundland, followed by a synopsis of the methodology used to inspect and inventory a collection of films sourced from Red Ochre Productions, archived after the company dissolved. Taking that collection as a case study, I then present an imagined future wherein a decentralized media archive is established in Newfoundland, one which relies not on unrealistic investment in infrastructure but instead by activating disparate local players to collaborate on an enriched media future. The goal is to prompt the beginning of a conversation about establishing adequate media archiving before materials are lost.
