Atmosphere
Atmosphere surrounds us and is a sensorial phenomenon. According to Whitehead, “We are left with the vague feeling of influences from vague things around us.”1 Atmosphere is challenging to grasp, as it tends to vary due to factors - including exterior ones - which can change frequently. This thesis aims to investigate how atmosphere can contribute to and influence the early stages of the design process and become a fundamental aspect of a proposal. Such an approach focuses more on the experience created than on the form or function of the space. While various factors affect atmosphere, this study focuses mainly on the relations between interior and exterior, scale and proportion, light and shadow, materiality, the sound of space and users.
