Part I of this volume contains chapters that represent various disciplines that are relevant to the understanding of singing. This overall context lays the groundwork for the remaining parts of the volume which focus specifically on the development of singing. By the same token, the foundation chapters will be relevant to the remaining two volumes of the series. This chapter is divided into two sections. The first section introduces the chapters that fall within a historical and musical framework. The second section introduces chapters from scientific and medical disciplines.
