This article corresponds to an ethnographic approach to the meaning of the concept of domestic and its relationship with the notion of poverty in six mothers and their families in a slum in Santiago, Chile. The objective is to expose not only the way in which home is understood but how it is lived, giving an account of knowledge based on the feeling, skills, and orientations that arise in contact with a specific environment. This work is divided into four sections: The first one describes the way in which the house becomes an area of transit between the ideal of home ownership and the exercise of this ideal in the present. The second section describes the cleaning practices through which the house acquires the form of a refuge from the environment considered as adverse. The third part describes how the house can acquire the opposite character of the refuge as the problems of winter arrive. The final section relates the conception of the ideal home with an enclosed space, which is homologous to the ideal of a resistant body, where exposure is related to vulnerability. Finally, I reflect on the identity processes that are part of the social construction of poverty.
