"Surveillance has become ubiquitous in contemporary society. From government and corporate programs for collecting information to the interpersonal forms of watching embedded in social media, surveillance structures our lives in fundamental ways. While many of these surveillance practices have long histories in Euro-Western contexts, dating at least back to the late eighteenth century, most commentators would agree that there has been a dramatic increase in the scope of surveillance in recent decades, especially with the advent of digital technologies."
