<p dir="ltr">Definitions and interpretations of fact and fiction have been fluid and contentious through the history of documentary filmmaking. We live now in a world where technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) call into question fundamental principles of documentary pedagogy. Educators may co-opt or form allegiances with AI and its descendants – there are signs that this is already happening. However, as technologies and teaching methodologies develop, the increasingly polarized socio-political world may present equal or greater ethical challenges. The implications for and responsibilities of documentary education are as great as they have ever been. This book provides a record of past and contemporary documentary teaching and related creative practice and invites readers to address these and future questions that arise in the domain.</p><p dir="ltr">In light of the nature and scale of challenges in contemporary documentary filmmaking, the Executive Council opened Volume III to contributions from beyond CILECT member institutions and constituted the editorial team entirely from colleagues who are recognized experts in the field of documentary filmmaking and/or theory and analysis.</p><p dir="ltr">Five volunteers who meet the criteria are together responsible for the form and coherence of <i>Teaching Documentary for the 21st Century</i>. They are Kerstin Stutterheim (Project Coordinator), Gerda Cammaer, Roz Mortimer, Kym Campbell, and Nico Meissner. Practitioners and teachers from around the world authored the nineteen chapters in the book. Two more volumes in the series will be published later in 2024: <i>Teaching Sound</i> and <i>Teaching Animation</i>.</p><p dir="ltr">The <i>21st Century Film, TV and Media Schools Book Project</i> is a direct expression of CILECT’s commitment to develop and promote the highest standards of education, research and training for film, television and related media. Each volume is a teaching and learning resource, a survey of similarities and differences across CILECT’s global membership, and a repository of connections between audiovisual education and the professions and arts it serves.</p>
